Get outside this spring

Happy spring, Virginians! Now is the best time of the year, isn’t it? The weather is warmer, the skies are bluer and everything is in bloom. And after so many months of winter, we’re guessing you’re ready to get outside.

But with so many great things to do in our area, you’re probably wondering where to start. Check out our list below for our some of our favorite activities for the season.

Visit a pick-your-own farm

Spring means things are in bloom! This includes wildflowers, great fresh produce and lots of berries. What better way to celebrate the season than with a pick-your-own farm? This is a great day activity for families, but don’t think you have to have kids to enjoy it. It’s a great and memorable activity for people of all ages.

Did you know that Virginia Beach is the largest producer of strawberries for the state of Virginia? Check out Flip-Flop Farmer to pick your own. They’re open daily from 8 am – 6 pm. Or check out Henley Farms. This family-owned farm is open year-round and grows everything from strawberries to Christmas trees (depending on the season). They also have freshly grown fruit for sale if you’d prefer a bit less work. Either way, strawberry season runs through June!

Go fishing

The beautiful spring weather means the season is a great time to get outside and with Chesapeake Bay right next door, why not try your hand at fishing? You don’t have to be an expert to have fun near the water. Chesapeake Bay is the largest natural estuary in the country and is home to nearly 350 different fish species. It produces almost 500 million pounds of seafood each year! Some of the most popular varieties include sea bass, flounder and rockfish. The spring is the best time to start catching flounders. Fish from the shore or head out on a charter boat for prime fishing.

If you’d rather do the eating instead of the catching, check out some of the best fresh-caught seafood at HK on the BayWaterman’s Surfside Grille or Blue Seafood & Spirits. Each serves up delicious and fresh seafood right from the water. Enjoy our great local fish without catching them yourself!

Drink at a brewery

For a more adult-friendly activity, check out some of our great local breweries. There are tons of local options nearby, but we suggest Commonwealth Brewing Company for beach-friendly, laid-back vibes. Make sure to try their Bodhisattva. It’s a refreshing Gose-style beer (meaning it’s brewed with a hint of salt) along with mango, pineapple, lime and coconut balanced perfectly with a creamy sweetness. They also have hard seltzers and pizzas for non-beer-loving folks.

Smartmouth Pilot House Brewery is another great option. It’s just a few blocks from the water and brews its own ales, small-batch style. They also have tons of options on tap to choose from. Smartmouth and Commonwealth both have great outdoor seating options so you can continue to enjoy the spring sunshine and even bring the pooch along. Both also have food trucks, so you can grab some great snacks, too.

Take a hike

The best way to see all the blooming flora is with a hike in one of our parks. If you haven’t already, you may want to consider First Landing State Park. This beautiful area is adorned with Spanish moss and offers a quiet and romantic day out. There are tons of great hiking and bike trails. We also suggest Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge for more intermediate-level trails. It offers thousands of virgin coastal habitats and with around 100 miles of trails, there’s always something new to explore.
